Final piece planning

Final piece planing and preparation

My Personal Investigation aimed to explore the idea of Time within Photography. Although I have been on quite a journey – from very ‘set up’ shoots, such as my ‘dust’ series to a life changing visit to the abandoned in time Chernobyl, I have always wanted to present a series of differing artefacts as my final piece.

Using antiquated viewing platforms such as film projectors seemed like a pertinent and effective way to display some of my best edits.  I was lucky enough to source and purchase a working vintage 35mm film projector. This relic is not only a beautiful piece of machinery, but the projected light and ‘clunking’ sound of the slides being placed and rotated will add to the authenticity of my final installation – conjuring memories for my audience (of a certain age!). I also want to bring some artefacts back from Chernobyl to use as part of my final piece

However because of the age of this film projector I encountered some issues. firstly the projector was fitted with an old and outdated circular plug. So I had to replace it with a more modern plug so the projector could actually be used (See below for before and after). I also had to replace the bulb as it had been smashed some time ago.

I’ve also selected a old fashioned projector screen to fit with the vintage feel of the display.

My plan is to store all my negatives of my film photographs in film frames so the projector can accept them, then for all my work on DSLR I plan to set up my SLR camera on a tripod and print out large copies of my favourite images and recapture them on film (see above for the process in more detail).

Once my images are all on 35mm film and have been fully developed I plan to cut them into individual images using a film cutter. Then I am going to put them into individual film frames and seal them closed with a film press.

I also then plan to add them to the circular film cartridge, then make a information list using the numbers on the cartridge. I will include information such as; DSLR/SLR, location of shoot, name of shoot and camera information (if available).
